The word sustainability gets a new meaning with ROLF's new sustainable eyewear line, SUBSTANCE, which is plant-based and made from beans from the same family as the castor tree. The beans are crushed and combined with a natural binding agent and then 3-D printed.

The new SUBSTANCE eyewear collection from ROLF Spectacles is all about plant power.
Working with plants is nothing new for ROLF Spectacles. Their latest natural material is taken from a species of the Euphorbiaceous family and has proved itself to be a competent all-rounder. It has opened up a wealth of new possibilities for ROLF and as a material, its sustainability credentials are particularly impressive.
“The plants are grown in tropical climates without any kind of genetic engineering, they don’t compete with food crops, and they can grow very tall, very quickly: where spruce or a beech will only grow a few centimeters taller every year, this remarkable plant will shoot up six meters in just four months, and it comes back every year,” explains company founder and visionary Roland Wolf. "This makes the new material more sustainable and kinder to the environment than ever – and the perfect foundation upon which to build our new collection of glasses to meet the current demand for more climate-considerate products."
Design & Craftsmanship
The starting point for the new SUBSTANCE collection is a powder obtained from the so-called miracle tree - a species of the Euphorbiaceous family. However, for ROLF Spectacles, eyewear it's not all about material.
Great design is key, especially for the Substance collection. Fine contours, thin temple attachments, and strategically placed curves make each pair of glasses a beautiful yet functional accessory with maximum comfort.
ROLF Spectacles' award-winning Flexlock joint proved to be the ideal addition. It can be easily co-printed using 3D technology, enabling ROLF Spectacles to manufacture its new eyewear in one go, thus keeping production simpler. In addition to the high functionality of the screwless Flexlock joint, wearers also benefit from the flexibility and skin compatibility of the plant-based spectacle frames.
