Computer vision syndrome, also referred to as digital eye strain, describes a group of eye- and vision-related problems that result from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader and cell phone use. Many individuals experience eye discomfort and vision problems when viewing digital screens for extended periods.
Some symptoms of CVS include headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, redness in the eyes, fatigue, eye strain, dry eyes, irritated eyes, double vision, and difficulty refocusing the eyes. These symptoms can be further aggravated by improper lighting conditions (i.e., glare or bright overhead lighting) or air moving past the eyes (e.g., overhead vents, direct air from a fan).
Allergens such as pollen, mold, dust, and dander can affect your eyes causing them to become swollen, red, watery, itchy and irritated. Eye allergies can play a role in conjunctivitis (pink eye) and other eye infections caused by harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi leading to symptoms such as discharge, light sensitivity, and blurry vision.
At Urban Optiks, we use biomicroscopy and fluorescein staining to differentially diagnose between eye allergy and eye infection.
Dry eye is a condition in which there are insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Dry eye is a common problem and when it becomes chronic it is referred to as dry eye disease. Symptoms of dry eye range from grittiness and scratchiness to blurred and impaired vision.
At Urban Optiks, we provide a dry eye evaluation to access the tear film of the eye. Based on this evaluation your doctor will prescribe artificial tears, omega-3 fatty acid supplements, Restasis eye drops, or some other form of treatment.
Urban Optiks works with a variety of ophthalmologists and eye care specialists. Our doctors can refer you to one of our partners and co-manage your care for a variety of issues, including:
